What does VRF mean?
VRF stands for Variable Refrigerant Flow (Daikin's version is branded VRV, Variable Refrigerant Volume). It is a scaled-up cousin of the domestic multi-split: one or more outdoor units serve many indoor units, but the system continuously varies how much refrigerant flows to each indoor unit to match the exact demand in that zone. The result is precise, efficient temperature control across a whole building.
Whereas a home multi-split might run up to five indoor units, a VRF system can serve dozens across multiple floors. How VRF works and why it's efficient
A VRF system uses inverter-driven compressors that ramp output up and down rather than switching fully on and off. By delivering only the refrigerant each zone needs at any moment, it avoids the energy waste of oversized fixed-speed systems and holds temperatures very steady.
The standout feature of heat-recovery VRF is simultaneous heating and cooling: it can cool a sunny south-facing meeting room while heating a shaded north-facing office at the same time, moving heat from one zone to another instead of wasting it. For a building with varied loads, this delivers significant efficiency gains. As with all air conditioning, VRF units are reverse-cycle heat pumps, so heating is built in.
Where VRF makes sense (and where it doesn't)
VRF is the right choice for larger commercial buildings: multi-floor offices, hotels, care homes, schools, retail and mixed-use developments where you need many zones, simultaneous heating and cooling, and centralised control. It scales cleanly and integrates with building management systems.
For a single shop unit, a small office or a home, VRF is usually overkill, a single split or multi-split will do the job for far less. VRF projects are quoted per building rather than from a simple price list, because cost depends on the number of indoor units, the building layout, pipework runs, controls and whether it's a new fit or a refurbishment. As a guide, commercial whole-building systems start well above domestic ducted figures and scale with the number of zones.
