For single rooms and small suites, wall-mounted or ceiling-cassette splits are usually the most cost-effective choice. Once you reach several rooms or a whole floor, a VRF (Variable Refrigerant Flow) system is normally the better long-term answer — one outdoor unit serves many indoor units, each independently controlled, with strong part-load efficiency when only part of the building is occupied.

Because an air conditioner is a reverse-cycle air-to-air heat pump, the same units that cool you in summer also provide efficient heating in winter — useful for offices that want to move away from older electric or gas heating for comfort and running-cost reasons.

A typical UK office needs roughly 0.06–0.10 kW of cooling per square metre, but server rooms, glass-fronted meeting rooms and densely occupied open-plan areas push that higher — we always size from a proper heat-load survey rather than a rule of thumb. Getting this right avoids both undersized systems that never cope in a heatwave and oversized systems that short-cycle and waste energy.
