Most people call it air conditioning, but a modern reverse-cycle AC unit is technically an air-to-air heat pump. The very same machine that cools your rooms in a July heatwave runs in reverse to warm them on a cold morning. It is one of the most efficient ways to deliver comfort to a Surrey home all year round.

An air-to-air heat pump moves heat between the outside air and your rooms using a refrigerant cycle. In summer it removes heat to cool you; in winter it reverses to warm you. It is the same hardware as a reverse-cycle air conditioner and is highly efficient, often producing three to four units of heat per unit of electricity.

How an air-to-air heat pump works

An air-to-air heat pump uses a refrigerant cycle and a compressor to move heat rather than burn fuel to create it. An outdoor unit exchanges heat with the air outside, and one or more indoor units distribute warmed or cooled air around your rooms.

In cooling mode it extracts heat from inside and rejects it outdoors. Flip a valve and the cycle reverses: even in cold British weather there is usable heat in the outside air, which the system concentrates and delivers indoors. Because it is moving existing heat instead of generating it, a good unit can return roughly three to four units of heat for every unit of electricity it draws.

Year-round comfort, one system

The big advantage over a cooling-only mindset is that a single, well-sized system handles both seasons. You get fast, controllable cooling through the hottest weeks and an efficient, instant-warming heat source on chilly days and shoulder seasons.

Modern inverter-driven units from Daikin and Mitsubishi Electric ramp their output up and down smoothly rather than switching hard on and off, which keeps rooms at a steady temperature and keeps running costs down. They also filter and dehumidify the air, which helps comfort and indoor air quality.

What it means for running costs

Because heat pumps move heat so efficiently, an air-to-air system can be a genuinely economical way to take the edge off cold rooms, especially in a well-insulated home or for heating a single zone you use most. Running cost depends on the unit's efficiency rating, how well your home holds heat, your electricity tariff and how you use it.

An important honesty point: an air-to-air heat pump is not currently eligible for the Government's Boiler Upgrade Scheme. That grant supports air-to-water, ground-source and biomass systems, not air-to-air. We never claim a grant for air conditioning that does not exist.
