The names cause the confusion

When people say "air conditioning" they usually picture cooling. When they say "heat pump" they picture heating. But a reverse-cycle air conditioner is an air-to-air heat pump — the identical box of components, simply run in whichever direction you need. Marketing has split one product into two words.

Where the real difference is: air-to-air vs air-to-water

An air-to-air heat pump (your AC unit) delivers warmed or cooled air directly into rooms through indoor units. It both heats and cools, responds quickly and is what most Surrey homes choose for comfort cooling plus winter top-up heat.

An air-to-water heat pump heats water that flows to radiators, underfloor heating and your hot-water cylinder. It is a central-heating replacement and does not cool. It is also the type that qualifies for the Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant; air-to-air does not.

Which is right for you?

If your priority is staying cool in summer with the bonus of efficient heating in the rooms you use, an air-to-air system (air conditioning) is usually the answer — quick to install, no wet pipework, and it does both jobs.

Frequently asked questions

Is a heat pump just air conditioning?
An air-to-air heat pump is the same as a reverse-cycle air conditioner. An air-to-water heat pump is different — it heats water for radiators and does not cool.
Can air conditioning replace my heating?
It can heat the rooms it serves very efficiently, but it does not heat your hot water and is not a full boiler replacement. For whole-home wet heating you need an air-to-water system.
Why does my AC unit have a heat setting?
