Does Air Conditioning Heat as Well as Cool?
Plenty of people are surprised to learn their air conditioning can keep them warm in winter. Modern reverse-cycle systems are not cooling-only — they are heat pumps, and heating is built in. Here is exactly how that works and whether it is worth using.

Yes. Almost all modern air conditioners are reverse-cycle, meaning they heat as well as cool. The unit simply runs its refrigerant cycle in reverse to draw heat from the outside air and deliver warm air indoors — efficiently, and often producing three to four units of heat per unit of electricity.
How air conditioning heats your home
A reverse-cycle air conditioner is an air-to-air heat pump. To cool, it removes heat from your rooms and dumps it outside. To heat, it reverses the cycle: even in cold weather there is heat energy in the outdoor air, and the unit concentrates it and blows warm air into your rooms.
Because it is moving heat rather than burning fuel to make it, this is a remarkably efficient way to warm a space — typically delivering three to four units of heat for every unit of electricity used. Warm air arrives within minutes, so it is ideal for taking the chill off quickly.
When heating mode is most useful
Heating mode comes into its own in spring and autumn, on cold snaps, and for warming the specific rooms you use most without firing up the whole central-heating system. It is fast, controllable and zone-by-zone, which can save energy compared with heating the entire house.
It works through a British winter too, though efficiency and output fall as the outside temperature drops. For most Surrey homes it is a genuinely useful supplementary or shoulder-season heat source, not just a summer cooler.
An honest word on grants and running costs
Running cost depends on the unit's efficiency, your home's insulation and your electricity tariff, but the high efficiency means heating mode is usually cheaper to run than direct electric heaters and competitive with other options for the rooms it serves.
One thing we will not do is claim a government grant for it. Air conditioning is air-to-air, and air-to-air heat pumps are not eligible for the Boiler Upgrade Scheme — that grant is for air-to-water, ground-source and biomass systems. The heating benefit is real; the grant simply does not apply.
