Is air conditioning really expensive to run?
It's the question we hear most in Surrey homes, and the honest answer is: far less than people expect. The "too expensive to run" reputation comes from old, fixed-speed units and from confusing the power rating on the box with what the unit actually draws hour after hour.
A modern wall-mounted split system in a typical bedroom or home office uses somewhere between 0.5 kW and 1.2 kW of electricity when it's working. At the April 2026 price cap rate of around 24.7p per kWh, that's roughly 12p to 30p an hour while cooling. Run it for four hours on a hot evening and you're looking at well under a pound. For most households that's cheaper than they feared and comparable to running a couple of older incandescent habits around the house.
How inverter technology keeps the cost down
This is the part that changes everything. Older air conditioners were either on (running at full power) or off. A modern inverter unit instead varies its compressor speed continuously, ramping up to cool a warm room quickly, then throttling right back to a gentle trickle to hold the temperature.
The result is that the headline kW figure is the maximum draw, not the typical one. Once your room reaches its target temperature, the unit often sips only 100-300 watts to maintain it. That's why real-world running costs sit at the lower end of the range, and why all the brands we install (Daikin, Mitsubishi Electric, Fujitsu and Samsung) build their efficiency story around inverter performance. The efficiency is measured as SEER for cooling and SCOP for heating, the higher the number, the more cooling or heating you get per pound of electricity.
Running cost by kW and hours used
The maths is simple once you know two things: the unit's power draw in kilowatts, and how many hours you run it. Multiply the two together for kilowatt-hours, then multiply by your electricity rate. We've used 24.7p per kWh below, but check your own tariff, an Economy 7 or EV tariff can make off-peak cooling cheaper still.
Remember these are maximum-draw figures. With an inverter unit holding a steady temperature, your actual cost will usually land below the column total because the compressor isn't running flat out the whole time.
Don't forget: the same unit also heats your home
Here's the bit people overlook. An air conditioner is an air-to-air heat pump running in reverse, so the very same box that cools you in July will warm a room in winter, and it does so remarkably efficiently. For every unit of electricity it draws, a good heat pump delivers roughly three to four units of heat, because it's moving heat rather than burning fuel to create it.
That means in milder spring and autumn weather, heating a single room with your AC unit can be cheaper than firing up a gas boiler for the whole house. It genuinely earns its keep year-round. One important caveat: air-to-air heat pumps (which is what air conditioning is) are not eligible for the Boiler Upgrade Scheme, that grant only covers air-to-water, ground-source and biomass systems. Anyone telling you there's a government grant for air conditioning is mistaken.
Five ways to keep your running costs low
A few sensible habits make a real difference to what you actually pay:
Size it correctly. An undersized unit runs flat out and costs more; an oversized one short-cycles. Proper sizing at survey is the single biggest lever, this is exactly what we calculate before quoting. Set a sensible temperature. Aim for around 23-25°C in summer rather than blasting it to 18°C, every degree lower adds to the bill. Use the inverter's strengths. Letting it hold a steady temperature is cheaper than repeatedly switching it on and off. Keep filters clean. A clogged filter forces the unit to work harder; an annual service (around £70-£120 per indoor unit) keeps it efficient. Close doors and curtains on the sunny side so you're not cooling the whole street.
